The Voice 2014

Wednesday, December 10, 2014

America has confirmed it wants to hear Monroe native Damien Lawson compete in the final round of NBC's hit singing show, "The Voice."

Lawson was booted out of the competition early on Tuesday (Dec. 9) night's show but then allowed to compete with eight other previously eliminated semifinalists who were voted off in recent weeks for a fourth "wildcard" spot in the finals and a chance to win it all.

Viewers cast their votes via text, social media and by downloading Lawson's Tuesday night performance of Bruno Mars "Grenade" on iTunes.

Lawson, who grew up singing in church in Monroe and relocated years ago to Los Angeles to pursue what was ultimately a failed attempt at a music career, made it to the top five before he was voted out, then back into, the finals.

Before he joined "The Voice" cast, he worked for the Transportation Security Administration at the Los Angeles International Airport.

Cam Newton Car Accident

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was involved in a car accident on Tuesday in Charlotte. Team Director of Communications Charlie Dayton said Newton suffered two transverse fractures in his lower back and no internal injuries.

The Panthers released a statement: "Cam Newton is in fair condition and undergoing tests at Carolinas Medical Center and will remain there overnight for observation."

The injury is similar to the one suffered by Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, who missed one game with the injury earlier in the season before returning to action. The transverse process is the small bone that sticks out of either side of the vertebrae on the spine. The Charlotte Observer reported Newton is likely to miss Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.

Newton was loaded into an ambulance after his car apparently overturned in the wreck. There are several tweets that captured images from the scene. FOX Sports Carolinas learned that Newton didn’t want to be transported and argued with police and medics about it.
